Technology to support learners on the Autistic Spectrum
There is no doubt that most children and adults on the autistic spectrum like computers and are motivated by technology. This day will explore the practical application of software and hardware resources that are available to support these learners and utilise their own individual learning styles and needs.
Programme
Colleagues attending this course will:
- Have an understanding of some of the difficulties experienced by learners of all ages with autism and technology's role in helping with learning and communication.
- Understand how effective and targeted use of resources can be useful in supporting learners with autism in the inclusive classroom and in other settings where learning takes place.
- Explore a wide range of software and hardware offering practical support for learners.
- Be provided with a range of ideas and resources that may help to inspire and encourage further use of ICT with this group of learners.
This course is ideal for SENCOs, teachers, therapists and support workers who teach and/or support pupils with additional needs related to autism in mainstream and special schools as well as in other settings. We will be looking at how the hardware and software can support learners of all ages and ability levels.
Each delegate will receive a 1GB memory stick preloaded with extra material relevant to the course.

- What is autism and how can ICT can help?
- Accessing Technology - looking at the range of access options and how to decide on appropriate hardware resources.
- Interaction and Exploration - exploring the range of hardware and software for learners at the early stages of using technology.
11:00 Session 2
- Personalised Learning - exploring the range of software options useful for meeting individual needs.
- Assessment - how software can help give an indication of learners' skills.
- Daily Routines - motivational ways of using software in routine activities.

A buffet lunch is provided.
Delegates will have the opportunity to look at other hardware and Inclusive Technology software.
13:30 Session 3
- Communication - looking at the range of communication resources and strategies available and practical ideas for use.
- Literacy and Recording - an overview of appropriate software to aid literacy development and recording skills.

- Individual exploration - a chance to explore any of the technology discussed today in more depth, to discuss individual learners and situations or download/ make resources to take home.
