From Cause and effect to communication

Where do you start with communication aids? How do we move on from a Big Mack? How do you keep students engaged and interested whilst developing their early communication skills?

This course will take a practical look at selecting appropriate aids and vocabulary, taking students from using single messages to early word combinations.

Programme

Colleagues attending this course will:

  • Explore how communication aids can be used throughout the day with language available to allow the student to take an active role in activities.
  • Gain an overview of some of the most commonly used communication aids.
  • Gain an overview of the latest theories and guidance for vocabulary selection and display.
  • Investigate software and resource making materials.

This course will appeal to teachers, speech and language therapists, support staff and anyone helping students to use early communication aids.

Each delegate will receive a 1GB memory stick preloaded with extra material relevant to the course. It can also be used throughout the day to save their practical work.

  • Choosing a communicator - where to get good advice
  • Maximising opportunities for communication
  • Single message communicators (vocal and non-vocal examples)

  • Moving on from single message devices
  • Introducing choices
  • Using multiple message devices
  • Generating ideas for grids/language for simple overlays

Delegates will also have the opportunity to look at other hardware and Inclusive Technology software.
