What is the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists?
The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) is the professional body for speech and language therapists in the UK. It is responsible for setting, promoting and maintaining high standards in the education, clinical practice and ethical conduct of speech and language therapists.
RCSLT
• monitors the education of speech and language therapists and awards a
certificate to practise only to individuals who have successfully completed an
accredited course. Speech and language therapy courses are at degree level and
most last three or four years. There are postgraduate courses which normally
last a minimum of two years.
• maintains a register of practising members. Members are all qualified
speech and language therapists who must adhere to the Royal College's code of
ethics and are committed to continuing their professional development
• encourage research
• provides an information service
• publishes the 'European Journal of Disorders of Communication' which
contains up-to-date research on speech and language difficulties
• publishes 'Communicating Quality' - a guide to professional standards
and good practice in speech and language therapy
• provides careers information on speech and language therapy
