RCEVH

The Research Centre for the Education of the Visually Handicapped have a large selection of publications and software for supporting the visually impaired. They also hold training/demonstration days - free of charge; have done a lot of work on speech-based Internet access and produce regular Newsletters in print and on tape.

Ed - A Talking Communicator. RCEVH in conjunction with UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) are working on Ed. After looking at several communication aids they are designing Ed to the following specification:

• Direct switch access (for up to 4 switches/messages).
• Expandability of the system to encompass overlay keyboard type access (for more than 4 messages)
• Up to 8 minutes of sound/speech output.
• The facility to import additional sound/speech messages.
• Less than £300.

It should be available commercially around December 1998.
