Headway
Headway is a registered charity dedicated to the care and successful
reintegration of head injured people within the community. They have over one
hundred local groups and many Day Care Centres in Britain.
Each person
who has a head injury has unique physical, intellectual or social
rehabilitation problems, such as: loss of physical sensations; lack of
initiative; slowed responses; inappropriate behaviour; poor perception
recognition and judgement; personality changes; poor concentration; physical
disabilities; poor memory; lack of insight; poor planning and problem solving
skills; inability to understand and communicate.
Headway provide
information about the possible consequences of head injury and the related
problems which can face both victim and their carers. They produce a wide range
of publications on the various issues concerned with head injury, written by
professionals, and available at a very low cost as they are a non-profit making
organisation.
They maintain a list of Rehabilitation Centres and also
a list of solicitors who specialise in personal injury compensation claims
The local groups generally have contact with the individual families,
providing support, guidance, information and social outlets. Each group
operates differently, to accommodate local needs. Many publish a regular
newsletter. Groups have formed local networks of contact with professionals who
can help with advice on neurological, behavioural, cognitive, emotional,
physical, housing or legal problems.
They produce a quarterly
magazine, Headway News, and a monthly newsletter, Noticeboard.
