Connecting Switches to Battery Operated Devices
Toys and simple devices are often used to introduce switches because they are highly motivating and educational. Watching a child operate a toy using a battery adaptor and a switch can help establish whether they understand cause and effect: that is they know that the switch press causes the device to operate. Moving toys are also good for group work; the child can press to send the toy to a friend.

Many people find a standard mouse hard to use. Physical difficulties can make it hard to control, and long term mouse use can lead to RSI, making it advisable to use an alternative. The options available in this section of our catalogue can help.
Many of the alternatives have either a roller (sometimes called a tracker) ball or joystick type of control. The simplest are those like the Microspeed KidTRAC or PC TRAC. These meet any needs, but may not be appropriate for users with more severe motor control difficulties because they may find that they touch the exposed buttons accidentally.
More specialist devices like the Traxsys Rollers and Joysticks or the n-ABLER have guards or recessed buttons to make accidental presses less likely. Some devices also have switch jacks, allowing large eternal switches to be used instead of the built-in butons.

These are the simplest way for people with speech problems to make themselves heard. They are also a fun way to develop switch skills and assess a users' understanding - can they produce a message at the right time?
It is easy to change the message, giving lots of opportunities to join in. A child could join in by playing a repeated phase from a story or a chorus from a song. A toy control option adds an extra dimension by playing a message at the same time
as switching on a battery toy.

Devices with a s
mall number of messages may be the next step for users who can target more then one switch. Moving on to two messages can createmore opportunities to interact and it also introduces the element of choice. Pictures or symbols on the buttons will help users associate them with spoken messages and develop their vocabulary.
Stepped communicators are still operated by a single switch, but produce sequences of messages. Theuser could read the text from a story book,
give a sequence of instructions to a carer or friend, or count objects as they are placed in front of mate.

AMDi Smart Series
Features include a Smart Overlay System, Interchangeable Flash Memory, slimmer profile, controls hidden behind a door and a low battery indicator. With the Smart Overlay System, each overlay is 'keyed' by punching a hole in the designated area with a standard hole punch. Each Smart Series device then automatically identifies the overlay. Interchangeable flash memory cards each hold 6 levels of recorded voice with up to 30 minutes of recording time. So you can have unlimited numbers of levels on your device.

Pointing at something you want is a natural way to communicate. Young children often point accurately and with understanding long before they can react in other ways.
Bright, noisy computer programs can provide the stimulus needed by children and people with special needs. However, a mouse may require too much motor skill and switches may be too indirect. Touch monitors operate with standard mouse operated programs and provide the most direct input method of all. The user watches the screen and uses it as an input method. There is a direct connection between action and result.
