Word-processors or writing programs allow computers to be used for the writing, composing, storage and presentation of text. There are many different programs designed to do this, ranging from simple children's writing programs to the standard adult packages such as Microsoft Word.
Word-processors become increasingly complex with new features being
added with each new edition. This makes them confusing for many users. As a
result many are now adaptable and can be configured to meet different needs.
For example IntelliTalk and Inclusive Writer can be initially set up
with only a few options, others being added as needed.
Some programs will
also allow pictures and symbols to be used to support writing - see the Inclusive Writer, for example.
Although a word-processor is most commonly accessed via the standard keyboard, users with special needs can be given extra support by using other input methods.
