Target and Touch in the Classroom

Target and Touch: Music and Target and Touch: Patterns are packed with motivating activities that support the development of skills required to use a touch monitor effectively.

Laura Cryer gives an insight into its use in the Y3 classroom at Norfolk Park Community Primary School in Sheffield:

Target and Touch activities are differentiated so that the children can touch just one object as it appears, or lots of objects in set places, scattered or in a line to make them grow and watch the reward.

Abbie and Jodie

Abbie thinks the man in his bed is very funny and Jodie is enjoying watching too.


Working on the plasma screen, Abbie has to learn to use one hand (finger!) to touch the screen firmly.

One pupil enjoys touching the musicians in line (good for scanning) and then copying the dances and kissing the band goodnight!

Kevaun enjoys getting up close to the plasma screen watching the vibrant patterns of Target and Touch Patterns close up.


Abaas touches the musician in the middle of the screen to watch it grow and perform – he was scared of the screen and is only just learning to touch it by himself and it has taken a long time to get him to purposefully touch, not softly tap.


Paras has to touch each musician in turn, left to right to see and hear the reward.

Kevaun can see a silhouette of the object and name it and touch to reveal…

Another pupil has very little sight but manages well to locate and touch the black screen to start the animation.


The animated, large bright patterns on a black background suit those with limited vision and poor motor control, like Jodie.
