Information... Special Access Utilities

As computers are an important part of life, learning and work it is important that people with disabilities are able to have un-hindered access to them. Where possible this access should allow them to use a standard system with standard software and not require the use of expensive add-on equipment or additional software.

Recent developments in computer systems have recognised this need by building in special resources and utilities which help people with disabilities. As these are a standard part of the system their benefits should be explored when seeking an access solution.

Access features are designed to alter different aspects of the computer to help people with disabilities. They currently offer most support for people with physical and visual disabilities but as developers of software make more use of the accessories offered more people will benefit.

People with disabilities can have problems with various aspects of computer use, using the keyboard, being able to see the screen clearly, moving the mouse accurately etc. Once you have determined the nature of the problem it is necessary to know what is available on your computer that can help, and also where to find it.
