You Need
The SEN Code of Practice states that,
"A medical diagnosis or a disability does not necessarily imply SEN. It may not be necessary for a child or young person with any particular diagnosis or medical condition to have a statement, or to need any form of additional educational provision at any phase of education." (7:64)
However, it goes on in 7:65 to state that,
"Medical conditions may have a significant impact on a child’s experiences and the way they function in school. The impact may be direct in that the condition may affect cognitive or physical abilities, behaviour or emotional state. The impact may also be indirect, perhaps disrupting access to education through unwanted effects of treatments or through the psychological effects that serious or chronic illness or disability can have on a child and their family. LEAs should consider the need for assessment in line with the guidance at 7:55–7:63. The effects of a medical condition may be intermittent and their impact on the child’s function in school can vary at different stages of their school career."
The revised SEN Code of Practice makes no reference to specific medical conditions.
