Objective: To consider two ways of encouraging non verbal children to use their communication aids, rather than letting others communicate for them. 1. Ensure that the child has the most appropriate vocabulary available, by considering what part of communication is most important for them - their wants and needs, social interaction, social closeness or information transfer and how we provide that vocabulary? 2. Consider the opportunity of fun and enjoyment using communication aids. If the child can identify whatever they use to communicate as providing an element of enjoyment will they be more likely to use it for day to day activities?

We will look at the development of the project and the work done so far. This project has been developing a network of CAP contacts around England and are working together to build up expertise in the communication field. Pupils have been assessed and Trish Davidson will talk about case studies of pupils who have received their equipment and how this has changed their lives.

Target Skills: Supporting Entry Literacy and Target Skills: Supporting Entry Numeracy complement the existing entry literacy and numeracy CDs by providing more material at Entry 1 of the adult literacy and numeracy core curriculum, seeking to address topics not covered by the earlier CDs.
