SpecialneedsIT seminars - Best Practice in SEN ICT

The focus of this year's free seminar programme is 'Best Practice in SEN ICT'. Each session will illustrate, through examples of classroom practice, how technology is affecting the education of learners with special needs. This is an opportunity to gain lots of new ideas and inspiration!

Monday 22 May 2006

11:00am * Roger Bates, Information Director, Inclusive Technology IntelliKeys - an Inclusive Tool for Learning

Join Roger for this lively session looking at some of the practical aspects of using IntelliKeys to support learners with a range of special educational needs. Learn how to use the standard keyboard overlays and how to make your own with Overlay Maker 3 to support curriculum work from cause and effect and beyond. Roger will also be previewing the new UK version of IntelliTools Classroom Suite, which enables you to create your own personalised activities quickly and easily.

12:00am
* Crick Software Best Practice in SEN ICT - Clicker 5

Neil Andrew's presentation will focus on the practical application of Clicker 5 in the classroom. It will show how easy it is for teachers to use Clicker to support their children's writing, across a range of abilities and ages, and with particular reference to SEN users. The presentation will also show how to make on-screen books and other multimedia applications, as well as how to get hundreds of freely downloadable resources for Clicker 5. The presentation will also showcase some brand new resources for Clicker that are particularly suited to SEN users: Oxford Reading Tree for Clicker, Trackers for Clicker and ClickerVision

1:00pm * Val Brown - Becta ICT in Practice Award Winner, 2004 Using ICT Beyond the Curriculum

Join Val Brown, Deputy Head of Woodlawn School, as she shares some of their inspiring work through a selection of case studies. Come and see how ICT is used in a special school to support play, communication and learning.

2:00pm * The Force Ten Company Haptic Learning - Learn Through Touch!

Imagine trying to get over to your student the concept of the shape of an elephant and its size relationship with a mouse when they have no sight. Imagine trying to help a student with learning difficulties to understand trigonometry and angles, the planetary system or even the simple shapes of a house and a car. Imagine a piece of software that will allow the student to feel a tactile diagram, see colour images and hear information from the PC. The IVEO touchpad and IVEO Creative software opens up a new world to those with learning difficulties and those with vision impairments.

Tuesday 23 May 2006

11:00am * Carol Allen, Advisory Teacher, North Tyneside Will it Make My Life Easier?

Technology is having a tremendous impact on the inclusive teaching and learning of children and young adults with special educational needs. However, using technology in the classroom brings its own challenges. This practical session will explore simple ways of using software and equipment you may already have to personalise learning for children with a range of special educational needs.

12:00am
* Sherston Software Inclusive Titles from Sherston

Sherston's seminar will be delivered by Helene Podmore, Assistant Head Teacher at Hob Moor Oaks School, York. Helene is an advanced skills teacher; she won a regional award for excellence in special needs teaching in 2004. This seminar will explore the range of inclusive titles available from Sherston, along with examples direct from the classroom - showing you how they can be implemented in your daily practise. Features such as individualised settings, switch access, record keeping and much, much more will be looked at, within programs that teach high frequency word recognition, matching skills, basic literacy and numeracy skills and fine motor control skills.

1:00pm * Pete Wells, Becta ICT in Practice Award Winner, 2006 ICT - Inspiring Creative Teaching!

Join Pete Wells, winner of Becta's ICT Practitioner of the Year for Inclusion, for another fun-filled seminar! Pete will be demonstrating a disgusting yet stimulating sensory story, sharing a range of entertaining, sensory based lesson ideas and presenting some fantastic chromakey films (produced with a green background that can be removed and replaced) that are transforming his school's curriculum. Come along and prepare to be gunged!

2:00pm * Liberator It Can Work!

All those switches, boxes, symbols and communication devices were obviously never designed with a real teacher in a real classroom with real kids in mind. Maybe you can plug it all together, keep the kids busy and look impressive to your colleagues but what exactly are your pupils learning? With over 25 years experience of using assistive technology in the PMLD classroom, Martyn Maltby offers some simple, effective and tried and tested solutions to enable you to plan realistically, include everybody and provide concrete evidence of what each and every pupil has learnt. It can work!
