They are free to attend and you don't need to book places.

New Software for Early Years and KS1

Presenter: Trevor Millum
What are the features of good software for young learners, particularly those with learning difficulties? Clear layout, minimal on-screen instruction, small steps progression, easy teacher set-up, attractive but non-intrusive graphics and so on. This session will show some recent resource software which tries to apply these principles wherever possible. For example, See It - Say is designed to help users associate spoken, written and pictorial or symbolic representations, and is useful for the recognition of facial expressions, emotions etc. in many educational situations. There will also be a chance to see Number Bunnies, Shannon's Game and Century Box, amongst others.

Multi-Sensory Referencing including Objects Of Reference

Multi-Sensory Referencing is a technique that makes use of all the senses and all forms of communication to help develop understanding for individuals, especially those experiencing Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. This presentation gives a brief overview of MSR, looking at various alternative forms of communication, Sensory Cueing and Environmental Engineering in order to maximise understanding and opportunities for communication. A Multi-Sensory approach to communication includes the use of Objects of Reference. In order to establish an effective and workable OOR system, practitioners need to consider how to manage such a system, the stages of development of OOR use, and realistic and achievable target setting.

For people with special educational needs, ICT provides a powerful enabling tool that helps motivate and engage them in the learning process. However many learners, especially those with more profound or complex impairments, often need a more concrete, kinaesthetic approach. This seminar explores how ICT can be used to complement and enrich more traditional teaching methods providing meaningful opportunities to embed ICT across the whole school curriculum.

An introduction to new equipment from Toby Churchill, which moves into the field of environmental control. adVOCAte+ combines digital speech recording with easy to use environmental control in a small lightweight piece of equipment. The timer and latch module works with adVOCAte to teach cause and effect and scanning skills. Both pieces of equipment will be demonstrated on our stand as well as discussed in the seminar.
