Special Needs and Educational Media
With our partners BBC Learning Zone, Mencap and Screen South we will present television and online resources which have been developed during 2009 and are now available for your use. A new series of videos entitled Skills for Life is now online at the BBC's Learning Zone. These are targeted at young people with learning disabilities, as is Plannet, a new online service from Mencap designed to help with personal budgets. Finally, Gamelab is developing a new web space for young disabled film makers - this goes live in the spring. Many of the products to be shown have just been nominated for BAFTAs in November 2009.

This concept provides students with key life skills, which transfers out into independent living.
Stephen Lodge - Speaks4me

A new approach to "speaking and learning through pictures" using principles of drag and drop?

Being a parent of a non-verbal child with severe autism and with 20+ years' experience in computer electronics and software engineering, I created an innovative speech communication and educational learning device that could support not only his needs, but those of others. After researching existing technologies we continued to develop our patent-pending speaks4meŽ product range. Speaks4meŽ uses a "virtual" and extendable, personalised picture symbol image exchange approach to facilitate "speaking and learning through pictures." It is based on "drag-and-drop" actions with a variety of supported input methods: mouse, touchscreen, Eye-GazeT and more. This simple yet powerful methodology empowers the user to create expressive single word or multi-phrase sentences to engage with others.

BIGmack and Beyond!
Practitioners often struggle with knowing how to help children develop communication skills beyond simple devices like the BIGmack. What are the steps between cause and effect, communication and choice making? How do we provide opportunities for developing this important stage of language development in the classroom? This presentation, delivered by Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Sandra Thistlethwaite, aims to provide plenty of practical ideas for using simple communication devices together with computer software to engage, motivate and include early communicators in teaching activities.

Using AAC with deaf people with additional needs

Find out about the challenges faced by three very different people learning to use AAC and how AAC was adapted to better meet their needs as deaf people. Oliver is a deaf teenager with physical and learning disabilities. He has a high tech VOCA, using The Grid 2 and Seashell Speak and Sign. Stephen is a young deaf man with learning disabilities and autism. He uses signing and a communication book. Jamie is a deaf child with severe visual impairment and learning disabilities. He uses a small number of signs and pictures. We will explore the impact of deafness on their development of aided communication and consider the impact of their additional disabilities on their development of unaided (signed) communication.

Controlling Toys and Devices
Switches and communication aids give learners with profound needs the opportunity to control electrical devices such as lamps and fans. Toys and music can also be controlled so individuals are able to play, experiment and learn independently. This session is designed to show how this can be achieved, focusing on the types of devices which are suitable and what kit you need to get them working. The practicalities of switches, connections, wireless and infrared will also be covered.

David will share his experience of working in Rotherham's special and mainstream schools where he uses SoundField PA systems to enhance the learning experience of all his students. Karaoke Literacy - Music Therapy - Happy Humanities - Active Assemblies. Be prepared to be challenged by this seminar. Access for all - new software and hardware developments
For most pupils, computer access and the ability to make their own choices of activity independently present no problems. However, for many pupils with physical, sensory and cognitive difficulties the question of choice does not arise - they need help to access the computer and help with choosing activities. The idea of them being able to use their own learning platform is just an impossibility. This presentation will show new Inclusive Technology developments that will open up access and choice to many more learners.

Learning to live with a learning platform - one year on
Harnessing Technology aspired to provide every pupil in the country with an online learning space by March 2008. The challenge now is to address issues of accessibility, usability and pedagogy. This session invites you to share your ideas and experiences, aspirations and concerns, as this aspect of educational technology moves towards ubiquity. This seminar will be useful for SENCOs, teachers in all phases with an interest in ICT and SEN, staff involved in BSF, head teachers and suppliers.

This seminar takes a sometimes light hearted look at switch access and switch skills progression. We will share examples for good (and bad) practice from schools around the world and present our switch skills progression 'route map' which you can use to help you plan learning journeys for your students.

Communication is at the heart of life. The interaction between the learner, other people and their environment should be fun, engaging and informative. We talk about 'transforming learning', 'sustainability', 'harnessing technology','parental engagement', 'creativity', 'student voice' and all the other in-vogue phrases - but what do they mean for educators, parents and carers and most importantly, the learners? This session will offer a range of creative uses of technology, all soundly based in classroom practice, which you can take away and try out. An abundance of low-cost/no-cost solutions will be on offer, so if you want to increase your students' access to creative communication - come along and enjoy!
