Reading and writing - how to support those that don't, or won't!
We communicate by reading and writing as well as speech. For some pupils it is the reading and writing that is the difficulty, not the speech. How then can they 'read' the texts and the books that their peers are reading? How can they 'write' their answers and stories if their literacy skills do not reflect their ability? This session will look at the use of audio to enable or enhance access to the curriculum using a variety of resources. For many of these pupils the use of audio can be liberating, giving them access to books and texts that they would not usually be able to manage, and bringing the opportunity to have their responses recorded to reflect their ability.

CENMAC
Levelling the playing field: free technology in the classroom
Presenters: Jessica Phillips and Imogen Wedgewood

CENMAC helps hundreds of London pupils each year by loaning equipment, training staff and giving advice and support. If you work with a pupil with any physical disability that affects their ability to communicate (either verbally or using text), then this session is a must. We will look at how different students are currently helped by CENMAC in mainstream and special schools. This session is for anyone who works with struggling pupils and wants to understand more about the types of technology they could use to achieve more.

13:00 Smartbox
Use your eyes to talk!
Presenters: Nick Ward & Stephen Hyde
Eye-tracking technology enables the computer to tell exactly where a person is looking on the screen. Through integration with effective communication software, this turns a computer into a hands-free, eye-controlled communication aid. In this session we will show why The Grid 2, integrated with the MyTobii eye-tracker, provides a cutting-edge solution to benefit users with a range of disabilities. This enables users to communicate through symbols or text, write letters, browse the internet, send and receive emails and text messages, and much more!

14:00
Keynote Speaker!
Judith Stansfield - former Chair of the BDA’S Computer Committee
ICT in the dyslexia friendly classroom
Needing to ask for help with reading and the writing down of information are the most humiliating aspects of dyslexia and one of the greatest factors causing low self esteem for students with dyslexia in all Key Stages. Suggestions will be made for the provision of, and training in the use of appropriate ICT hardware and software, that can enable students to work more independently, effectively and discreetly in mainstream classrooms.

Pete Wells - Becta ICT in Practice Award Winner for Inclusion
Sensory stories... and heading for Hollywood!

Join award winning teacher Pete Wells for a disgusting, fun-filled seminar featuring some of his favourite ICT resources that can motivate and inspire all learners. Pete will demonstrate one of his teen-friendly sensory stories, so expect to be tickled, splashed and gunged! He will also unveil a range of revealing celebrity interviews... so, who did set fire to the Sunderland’s Stadium of Light... and why did Britney Spears shave her nut?! He will also attempt to squeeze in at least one stop motion animation film and a cool digital story. Finally, Pete will show how any school can turn into Hollywood by showing off a range of chromakey (green screen) films, including a re-creation of the ill-fated trip on the Titanic (so bring a hanky and some swimming trunks).
