Our free Information Days are a great opportunity for educators, therapists, advisors and others working in the field of special needs to come together and see how technology is changing the lives of all learners. Delivered by members of our respected and highly experienced Information Team, these one day sessions are packed with practical ideas and advice.

Information Day Presentation

We now offer two types of Information Day:

Severe and Complex Needs – Communication and Learning Through Technology

This day focuses on the use of ICT to support the communication, learning and leisure needs of children and young people with severe and complex special needs. Delivered by experienced practitioners, the session will explore how the use of ICT facilitates meaningful and motivating access to the curriculum.

We will demonstrate a wide range of the latest hardware and software resources and provide lots of ideas on how you can use these every day;

  • From switches to eye-gaze; exploring access to technology.
  • Engaging experiential learners.
  • Developing Cause and Effect understanding.
  • Making effective use of a range of simple communication devices.
  • Creating motivational and personalised resources.

This day would be useful for teachers, therapists and support assistants working directly with learners experiencing severe and complex special educational needs.

Inclusive Classrooms – Supporting Struggling Readers and Writers

This day focuses on using ICT to support students with special needs in mainstream settings. This includes looking at providing access to the computer for those pupils who struggle with the keyboard and mouse, including those with Dyspraxia:

  • Simple adaptations to the keyboard and mouse.
  • Accessibility changes to the operating system and applications.
  • Alternatives to keyboards and mice - from large keyboards to eye gaze.
  • Software to improve access: word prediction and speech recognition.

We will also explore how ICT can support those struggling with reading and writing, including those with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia.

Drawing on our experiences in the Accessible Resources Pilot Project for the DCSF we will look at the range of options to take struggling readers and writers from their initial ideas to a completed document including using:

  • Light tech aids like electronic dictionaries and reading pens.
  • Planning and mind mapping software including the latest versions of Inspiration, Kidspiration and Draft:Builder.
  • Text to speech, wordbanks and word prediction including the latest versions of Co:Writer, WordBanks, ClaroRead, Read and Write and Kurzweil 3000.
  • Portable book readers like Kindle, iPad and Slate.
  • Reading electronic books on the computer.
  • How to obtain electronic books for free.
  • Creating accessible electronic versions and copyright issues.
