For people not able to directly press buttons but wanting to access more than one or two messages, using switches with a scanning system is the main alternative. Scanning refers to the way items on a screen or buttons on a device are highlighted in turn (either automatically or by pressing a switch) and when the highlight reaches the desired item a switch is pressed to select it. However, this is usually a skill that has to be learnt - it is cognitively more difficult than direct access and physically may require repeated or timed movements that often need lots of practice in order to achieve.
The Scan4 and FL4SH are the simplest switch scanning communication aids on the market. They have a range of useful scanning options to make the method of access appropriate for the individual and the beginner user.
Scanning Terms Explained
Automatic single switch scan - the options are highlighted automatically in turn. Press when it reaches the desired item. Timing skills, i.e. pressing the switch at the right time, are essential. Scan4 and FL4SH have realistically slow scanning speeds for beginners.
Single switch step or dwell scan - useful for people who can manage repeated movements, but struggle to use two switches. Press the switch to move the scan highlight along and then ‘dwell’ or pause to activate the message.
Two switch scan - for those who can activate two switches. Press one switch to move the scan highlight and press the second when it reaches the desired button. This provides the user with good control but some can find it tiring.
Communicating the right message can be crucial, so it is useful to build scanning skills with activities that don’t have right or wrong responses. Computer software can be a good start. Try Alphabet Paint, 123 Paint, Pablo or to practise simple scanning.
Try fun game programs like Spot On Games for switch timing practise, or Switch Skills 1.
You can also easily make your own scanning activities using pictures and sounds that motivate the individual with ChooseIt! Maker 2.
