Spider in the kitchen!

Spider in the Kitchen! activities are designed to help learners with positional language, understanding of processes and matching objects to suitable locations. The program is are fully configurable for those who use a mouse, a touchscreen, switches or IntelliKeys.

Guess where

Designed to help develop anticipation skills. It comprises two activities, Guess where and Put things away.

In the first activity the spider hides randomly behind one of two objects. The aim is to find the spider by clicking on one of the objects.

When the spider is found, the program responds, stating behind which object the spider was hiding. Each set of pictures will be used as many times as has been defined.

In the second activity the spider hides behind one of three objects. Again, there are three sets of pictures. When all sets have been used, the title screen reappears.

In the third activity, the spider hides somewhere in the kitchen. the user must click on parts of the kitchen to try and find where it is hiding. This activity contains extended text responses, to introduce a narrative style. The spider will hide as many times as has been defined.

Tracking

These activities have been designed to develop the specific skills of anticipation and visual tracking.

In the first activities, one target, an object, such as a place, moves around the screen. The aim is to make a selection when the object is over its target - in this case, a cupboard. At the same time this is demonstrating the appropriate places for the animating objects.

In the two targets activity, there is one correct and one incorrect location for the animating object to go. The user gets no response unless they make the selection at t he correct moment.

Positions

in, on, under
This activity uses three objects - a bowl, some milk and some cheese. Each object appears on its own and has a specific question attached to it. The questions are...Is the spider in the bowl? Is the spider on the milk? Is the spider under the cheese? The spider appears in one of the three positions.

above, below, beside
The activity works in the same way as the first. The objects shown are the same. This time the questions asked are... Is the spider above the bowl? Is the spider below the milk? Is the spider beside the cheese?

in front of, behind
The same pictures but in two sets - first the bowl and the milk will appear together, then the cheese and the bowl. This time there are questions to match each of the spider's possible positions ... Is the spider behind the bowl? Is the spider behind the milk? Is the spider behind the cheese? - Is the spider in front of the bowl? Is the spider in front of the milk? Is the spider in front of the cheese? The questions are asked randomly, providing an extra level of difficulty over the consistent questioning of the first two activities.
