Clicker Phonics

Clicker Phonics screenshots

Clicker Phonics is a phonics programme that can also be used alongside other schemes, including 'Jolly Phonics', and takes children from the first steps of discriminating environmental sounds right up to systematic synthetic phonics. It gets your children going with phonics and delivers engaging materials at the right level for their needs.

Using the proven technology of Clicker 5, Clicker Phonics first develops speaking and listening skills and phonological awareness. Having built this foundation, it then presents a programme of systematic phonic work. You will find Clicker Phonics an easy yet incredibly powerful way to use ICT to support all your 3-to-6-year-olds, plus older pupils who are struggling with reading.

All the activities are carefully designed to be used in both whole-class teaching with the whiteboard, and for individual work. The series is split into the following three sets, each of which consists of two easy-to-use CDs.

(Requires Clicker 5 for Windows or Mac)

Get Ready!

Get your children ready for phonics by engaging them in these fun activities where they learn to discriminate between sounds - the difference between a dog's bark and a cow's moo; a baby's cry and children's laughter; a sneeze and a cough. Developing this awareness builds the foundation of young children's abilities to hear and discriminate between different sounds in words. Children also develop their speaking skills as they record their own sounds.

CD1 - Sounds Around

'Sound Jigsaws' develop children's listening skills

In Sounds Around, children learn to listen to and discriminate between sounds in five localities - the park, street, garden, beach and farm. There are many opportunities to record their own sounds and to talk about the different localities, thereby creating a link with geography work on localities and science work on sound. Children can explore the locations and complete a range of activities that encourage them to listen carefully and discriminate between the different sounds they hear.

CD2 - Noisy Bears

Children learn to listen carefully to identify the bears' musical instruments

In Noisy Bears, children listen to and discriminate between 'action noises' performed by six bear characters - Charlie, Millie, Boris, Lulu, Alfie and Dotty. Children meet the bears in a talking book with simple sentences about each character. The bears are involved in a variety of actions such as having a picnic and playing in a band. Children go on to make their own books, where they can record their own sound effects and stories.

Get Set!

At this stage, children tune into the sounds of language, learning to focus on patterns in words and differentiating between their sounds. This builds on the skills they have learned in the 'Get Ready' stage and lays the foundation for systematic phonic work in the 'Let's Go' stage. Hearing rhyme and alliteration in and between words encourages children to pay attention to detail, increasing their sensitivity to sounds in words.

CD3 - Rhyme Time

Children read easy rhymes and then compose their own, recording their own voices

In Rhyme Time, children engage in a variety of activities that encourage them to recognise and play with rhyming words, rhyming couplets and longer rhymes. Children experiment by inventing and recording their own rhymes. They create rhymes about nursery rhyme characters, write their own rhyming couplets and record rhyming strings of real and nonsense words.

CD4 - Alphabet Animals

Children have fun with alliteration, while finding out what the animals like

In Alphabet Animals, children increase their awareness of sounds, letters and words. They meet fun 'alliterative characters', appealing to children's sense of enjoyment in playing with 'silly' sounds. Children learn to recognise initial phonemes and matching sounds, through a variety of activities that include listening to alliterative sentences and recording their own versions.

Let's Go!

Now children are ready for synthetic phonics! These CDs follow the current recommendations for phonics teaching, and can also be used alongside other phonics schemes, including 'Jolly Phonics'. Engaging activities build children's fluency in hearing, saying, reading and writing all 42 phonemes. The activities develop the skills children need to be able to decode unknown words by working out the phonemes, reading them in order, and blending them to read the words.

CD5 - Sounds and Letters

Children hear the phonemes as they build the word

Sounds and Letters introduces the major grapheme/phoneme correspondences. Each letter sound and shape is introduced, and children gain synthetic phonic skills by blending sounds to build words. The phonemes are presented in groups to enable the teacher to introduce them in discrete daily phonic sessions. Strategies are presented to scaffold the process of decoding CVC words to prepare children for reading unknown words.

CD6 - Read and Write

Children read fun decodable stories based on the phoneme groups

With Read and Write, children practise and reinforce their synthetic phonic knowledge and skills through a wide range of reading, writing and spelling activities. Children tackle new and unknown words by applying their skill of blending phonemes from left to right. Many opportunities for the application of synthetic phonics skills are presented in fun stories that have decodable text.
