PC

It is usually necessary to re-boot your computer after connecting a PS2 device.

PS2 is the standard port for keyboard/mouse on modern PCs (but make sure you don't plug your mouse into the keyboard port - they are sometimes different).

USB USB
PC and Mac

Can be 'hot plugged' - there is no need to re-boot your computer after connecting a USB device.

Many new devices are now being made with USB connections.

PS2 to AT adaptors can be purchased to enable new PS2 devices to be connected to an older computer with an AT port.
