Screen and Display Settings

The size and type of display presented on the screen can be changed to help legibility. The range of settings available vary between the popular computer systems, for PC and Mac they can be extended by buying additional special software. It should be remembered that environmental factors such as ambient lighting can have a considerable effect on screen clarity, as can the type and size of monitor chosen.

Mere magnification of the display may not be desirable as this can make it harder for someone to find their way around the whole desktop. A clearly presented screen showing only essential parts of the program, logically laid out will be of benefit. If more than one person is using the computer it will help if the users' layout could be saved.

Choices of font, size, text and background colour can make a screen easier to read. Windows 98 and above offer an extensive choice of pre-set layouts with a choice of colours and sizes within the Windows desktop. Making the right choice requires time and care to ensure that all the options available have been fully exploited.
